What Is A Handstand Walk?
Handstand Walk is a nationwide 10 minute handstand walk-a-thon that combines athleticism with advocacy for pediatric cancer research. Athletes from the USAG and IGC programs are invited to participate in this one-hour event held at participating gyms. Leading up to the event, athletes raise funds to support childhood cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and the event day itself is a celebration of their efforts. On this day, athletes often wear gold—the color representing pediatric cancer awareness—and display signs of support. Gyms also decorate in gold to emphasize the cause. The event serves as both a fun and impactful opportunity for athletes to raise awareness and contribute to a critical cause.
Led by Kids for Kids:
We fundamentally believe that gymnasts are some of the most talented leaders, possessing unparalleled grit, determination, and a drive for perfection. They have the potential to excel as leaders in any arena they choose, and we are deeply committed to helping unlock and harness the leader within each of them.
Through an open application process, 1–3 athletes are selected as team captains at each participating gym. These captains take the lead in preparing their teammates for the weeks of fundraising leading up to their gym’s Handstand Walk. Their responsibilities include assisting with registration, coordinating group fundraising efforts, and organizing activities to boost awareness. Captains work closely with leadership mentors to ensure the Handstand Walk is both impactful and enjoyable.
From September through November, captains participate in weekly Zoom meetings to plan events, enhance organizational skills, and learn about advocacy, policy, and pediatric cancer research. At their gym’s Handstand Walk event, captains deliver a short speech to share what they’ve learned, thank their teammates, and celebrate their collective achievements.
Our program not only inspires giving but also fosters a generation of young leaders who are passionate about philanthropy and advocacy, with impact that extends far beyond our fundraising period.
Handstand Walk’s Structure
Handstand Walk for Kids is a 100% powered by volunteers. Founded in 2021, our team includes top advisors and dedicated volunteer athletes. This commitment ensures that 100% of every donation goes directly to research.
Why athletes want to participate?
Athletes have the opportunity to turn their gymnastics skills into a force for good. By participating, they demonstrate leadership within their communities, often hosting bake sales, making presentations, and using their social channels to spread awareness. Participation helps athletes build valuable leadership skills, earn volunteer hours, and give back to their communities. Plus, they connect with gymnasts nationwide who are passionate about making a difference!
